When Matthew Pook first picked up a rugby ball at Meridian High School, he couldn’t have imagined where the game would take him. Introduced to rugby through TackleLondon’s Schools Provision, Matthew’s journey has now led him to a Jack Petchey Achievement Award normination– and a new sporting home at Beccehamians RFC.
Matthew’s dedication, attitude, and quiet strength stood out immediately. Despite joining a team where most players had years of experience together, he never let that hold him back. Week after week, he kept showing up, giving his all, and proving himself as a vital part of the squad.
“It’s not easy to walk into a club and a team that has already bonded,” said the Beccehamians’ Team Manager. “But Matthew kept coming back and gives it absolutely everything on the pitch. He’s now an important part of our squad.”
The impact of rugby has reached beyond the touchline, too. For Matthew’s family, the sport has brought a new sense of confidence and joy to their lives.
Matthew’s story is everything TackleLondon stands for: opportunity, inclusion, and the power of sport to open doors. From school sessions to club pitches, we’re proud to support journeys like Matthew’s – and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
“We are honestly over the moon and so proud of Matthew,” said his mum. “He has always been naturally academic, but to have a sport that he enjoys both in and out of school makes his life that much more wholesome. It’s given him so much confidence as he is a shy boy. We’re so grateful to Meridian for introducing him to rugby.”
In a city where youth crime and social isolation are rising, initiatives like TackleLondon are more vital than ever. Too many young Londoners lack access to safe, positive environments outside school hours. That’s why we use rugby not just as a sport, but as a platform for mentorship, discipline, and belonging. By giving young people like Matthew a safe place to grow, connect, and thrive, we help steer them away from risk and toward opportunity. Every session is a chance to build confidence, resilience, and community – and every club partnership is a step toward a safer, stronger London for all.
