Our Work

Empowering Young Londoners Through Sport and Mentorship

TackleLondon uses rugby to enable and develop positive, supportive relationships within schools, rugby clubs and the community. We are committed to tackling inequality of opportunity and countering the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

Watch Now: How TackleLondon Works

TackleLondon was established to make a tangible, constructive difference to the lives of 6- to 24-year-old Londoners who face disproportionate challenges including living with ACEs. We work with schools and rugby clubs, in communities affected by increased levels of poverty, neglect and social disadvantage, to facilitate access to our own brand of sports mentoring: regular and ongoing engagement with trusted, reliable adults.

TackleLondon is a collaborative programme delivered by The Atlas Foundation, the Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation, and Star*Scheme. Together, we use the power of rugby and long-term mentorship to uplift young people across London who face significant life challenges, ranging from poverty and school exclusion to instability at home or involvement in the justice system.

School Sessions That Make a Difference

Our coaches deliver regular rugby sessions in schools, working closely with teachers to identify students who need support the most; those who are often distracted in class, disengaged, or isolated. What begins as a simple training session often becomes a turning point. Students who rarely interact in school start forming bonds with coaches and peers, unlocking confidence and communication skills.

"You see it straight away. As soon as they start their session, the rugby coaches have got them. They're engaged, they're showing respect and they're being polite to them. It shows that they're being provided with someone they can trust, but someone who's got humour- a personality - so that they start thinking 'Okay I'm here to learn a new skill. But, also, someone that cares about me, who wants to listen and give me guidance.'"

Assistant Head Teacher, Meridian Highschool

Beyond the Classroom: Local Rugby Clubs

The real magic happens when those school sessions become stepping stones to wider community engagement. We support young people to take the next step; to join local rugby clubs, connect with mentors, and find a place where they feel they belong. These environments offer a sense of routine, trust, and belonging that many young people have never experienced.

"Whether the game is going good or badly - whatever situation you're in - you know that you're in a supportive group of people who believe in you. That truly, truly can make a difference to all of us. As the pathway moves from a school situation into a rugby club situation, you’ve then got the wider community who believe in that individual to follow that pathway. Ultimately the mentoring will have had a phenomenal effect on any individuals life, and that's where we hope to get to by broadening the Tackle London programme."

Creating Safe, Inclusive Spaces

TackleLondon is about more than rugby. It’s about providing a safe space where young people feel seen, heard, and supported. Many of the communities we work in face high levels of gang activity, exclusion, and generational disadvantage. Our programme provides an alternative; a place where young people can express themselves, build resilience, and envision a future beyond their current circumstances.

Since launching, TackleLondon has supported over 1,000 young people across the capital. We’re proud to see the programme grow from more school partnerships to increased club engagement and stronger community presence. Our long-term mentoring model ensures that every young person has a consistent adult in their corner, offering guidance, stability, and belief.
